Abu Ghraib Water Treatment Plant
PROJECT NAME:
Abu Ghraib Water Treatment Plant
LOCATION:
Abu Ghraib, Iraq
CUSTOMER:
Ministry of Municipals & Public Works
SCOPE OF WORK:
EPC
DESCRIPTION:
The object of Abu Ghraib water treatment plant is to treat a large volume of water to serve the town and villages in the area, which are desperately short of water supply. The plant output is 12000 m/h. Raw water is drawn from Abu Ghraib irrigation channel beside the site of water work.
The low lift pumps are used to lift the water via twin 1500 mm pipes to flash mixer. Flash mixer forms an integral part with three distribution tanks, sludge disposals and balanced tank for collection of settled water, to the flow of raw water at the flash mixer. Aluminum sulfate and chlorine solution are added: the first as flocculent and the second one as predisinfectant. Water is delivered from flash mixer at controlled equal amount to twelve clariflocculators having acentral flocculating chamber and an outer settling zone. Settled water is delivered to balance tank and the sludge is removed by scrapper to the sludge chambers. The sludge and any overflow or scour water is delivered to sludge pit. Settled water is delivered by gravity using 800 mm twin pipes to the filter building into settled water channels. From these channels water is equally delivered to thirty rapid gravity sand fi1ters, each 40 m. From the filters clear water flows to ground storage tank 12000 m constructed adjacent to the pump house building. Water is again disinfected prior to entering the ground storage tank. From the ground storage tank water is delivered to the boosting station (s), also to networks from boosting stations and treatment plant by using sets of pumps. Delivery pipes are all ductile iron (DI). The plant and boosting station are supplied with electric power, telephone system, and diesel generating sets for emergency so that to give 75% output. With 100% for accessories.
